2005 / 2011:
"Soroptimist-Marathon for Peace in Rwanda" - Kigali

In all countries sports attract the attention of a large number of people. It is a powerful unifying element, bringing together all social classes and all generations. The two marathons had wide coverage in the international press and attracted participants from all over the world.

Why in Rwanda? After the horrible genocide Rwanda is certainly a country where the symbol of peace is more necessary than elsewhere. On the spot, a few Soroptimist clubs reacted enthusiastically and invested all their forces into its realisation. They had the strong conviction that this event would actively contribute to the process of reconciliation in the country. Two internationally recognised organisers of international marathons supported the project and were ready to go and plot and measure the official route. In parallel a mini-marathon for children was organised in Kigali.

Thanks to all the participants, our marathons were very successful.

2004:
Les poupées de la paix

Dolls of cotton material, height 30 to 35 cm, were sewn and stuffed with cotton by Soroptimists.

Soroptimists also asked VIPs, painters, writers, musicians, actors, fashion designers etc. to create their own doll from this basic figure. They were free to give it a face, to dress it, to decorate it with colours, to use it as part of an installation, whatever they wanted. They signed it and added a message of peace on the back side of the doll.

School classes were also involved in the peace doll project. To involve children in the peace doll projects was a wonderful way to promote Peace in the World.

The Soroptimists organised events where the dolls were presented to the media and then sold by auction.
